Point Pizza closed in Point Dume Village on New Year's Eve after 24 years, according to Patch's account of its farewell. Its Torpedo sandwich stayed in local memory for more than a decade. This fall it came back. The former owners gave the recipe to Sara Jerabek, a native Malibuite, who now sells it from a house on Morning View Drive that her grandparents first lived in.
That is how most of Malibu's newest openings work. A familiar thing returns in a smaller form, keeping hours that cover only part of the week. Taken together, the places that opened between August and October give Malibu a weekly rhythm that runs Wednesday through Sunday. Among the new places, a single grocery store covers the rest.
A Recipe Handed Down Through Point Dume
The Sandwich Shop sits at 30150 Morning View Drive, across from Malibu Middle and High schools. It opened just in time for the start of the school year, as The Malibu Times reported in its September business roundup. Jerabek told the paper why the Torpedo mattered to her:
"I was so excited to bring the Torpedo back! It's a sandwich we used to get from Pt. Pizza, and the owners were nice enough to give me the recipe so I could feature it on my menu! Having the Torpedo on the menu provides a bit of nostalgia for those of us who grew up here when I did."
The rest of the menu is named after local places. The Zooma Tuna gets heat from jalapeños and sriracha mayo. Big Dume is turkey and mild cheddar with shaved apple and fennel. La Costa comes in meat, vegetarian and vegan versions, and the Pink Lady layers burrata, white peaches, pistachios and mint under a pomegranate glaze. The kids' sandwiches carry the names Makos, Little Dume, Leo Carrillo and Bluffs, and many sandwiches come on Bubread.
The shop is in a house because of the permit it holds. Jerabek operates under Los Angeles County's Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operation program, which the county describes as a small-scale restaurant run from a home. The county's permit list shows The Sandwich Shop Malibu with a start date of May 27, 2026. Malibu.FM described the setup before opening day as takeout only, with orders handed out through a window in the fence along Morning View Drive, just west of Malibu Methodist Church.
A home kitchen naturally keeps short hours. According to the shop's own site, pickup and delivery run 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday through Friday. Sandwich boxes are available 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday. The site also announces Saturday openings starting Nov. 14, about two weeks after this post goes up. Orders can be texted to 833-542-4301.
The Grocery Is the Only New Place Open Every Day
Hank's Organic is the one new opening that runs a full week. It opened at 22601 Pacific Coast Highway, in the space Pacific Coast Greens occupied for 28 years. Councilmember Haylynn Conrad marked it in her Aug. 21 newsletter, writing that the store "officially opened its doors this week" and that East Malibu had gone without a grocery store of its own since PC Greens closed.
The wait was long. In January 2024, The Malibu Times reported that Hank's was slated to open, and noted that East Malibu residents had been without a grocery store for four years by then. The paper's September roundup said Malibu had waited more than three years for the opening, which was held up by permitting, fire delays and construction issues.
Founder Manuel Reynoso opened the first Hank's in the Arts District in 2021, built around the promise of "organic at the right price." The Malibu store is run by general manager Miguel De Alba. It has produce, a hot bar, coffee and smoothies, plus two machines The Malibu Times says you won't find anywhere else in town: one that slices pineapple and one that squeezes fresh orange juice while you wait. The paper lists the hours as 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day.
Hank's daily hours match the job it took over from PC Greens as East Malibu's everyday market, and the other new openings fill in around that schedule.
Malibu Road Gets the Weekend Shift
The weekend half of the week is anchored a few miles west on Malibu Road. BEAMS, the Japanese label founded in Harajuku that marked its 50th anniversary in February, opened its first U.S. brick-and-mortar concept shop at 23710 Malibu Road on Aug. 7. Hypebeast covered the opening with the same address and the same Friday-through-Sunday schedule.
The company has about 165 stores across Japan and Asia, and it chose to open its first American shop for only three days a week. BEAMS America's Malibu page lists hours of 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday through Sunday, with the shop closed Monday through Thursday and on major U.S. holidays. The Malibu Times describes the stock as everyday essentials made to be worn season after season, along with collaborations, including BEAMS' first with Hoka.
Down the same road, N2 Aesthetics Services held its ribbon-cutting on Aug. 22 at 23841 Malibu Road, Suite 18. It offers skincare, injectables, weight-management treatments and concierge wellness. Heather Alfano, a Malibuite who worked as an ICU nurse at UCLA for 18 years, told The Malibu Times that the opening felt "so gratifying" and that she hoped it would "help rebuild our beautiful community."
Two September Endings That Left Gaps
The new places arrived as two long-running ones wound down. Kristy's Wood Oven & Wine Bar at Trancas Country Market closed Sept. 9 after 15 years. The Malibu Times reported the farewell, quoting owner Kristy Apana: "You never know what the future holds!" She told CBS Los Angeles, "Our lease is also up, and so it was my decision to close." The Times reported that she plans to keep catering.
Rosenthal Estate held its last public Vineyard Experience tastings at its Newton Canyon property on Saturday, Sept. 26. After the wine bar and patio on PCH were destroyed, the canyon property had served as the stand-in, according to The Malibu Times.
Both closures took away full-service places to sit down. What opened since is takeout, retail and a grocery, most of it on part-week schedules. For now, Malibu's daily routine is being rebuilt from smaller pieces.
The Week, Laid Out
One more piece completes the week. The Malibu Farmers Market is back at its longtime home in the Malibu Library parking lot, 23555 Civic Center Way, on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., per The Malibu Times calendar. Here is the week with every new place on it:
| Day | What's open among the new and returning places |
|---|---|
| Monday | Hank's Organic, 7 a.m.–9 p.m. |
| Tuesday | Hank's Organic |
| Wednesday | Hank's Organic; The Sandwich Shop pickup 11 a.m.–3 p.m., boxes from 9 a.m. |
| Thursday | Hank's Organic; The Sandwich Shop |
| Friday | Hank's Organic; The Sandwich Shop; BEAMS Malibu 11 a.m.–6 p.m. |
| Saturday | Hank's Organic; BEAMS Malibu; Sandwich Shop boxes, with full Saturday service starting Nov. 14 |
| Sunday | Hank's Organic; BEAMS Malibu; Sandwich Shop boxes; Malibu Farmers Market 9 a.m.–2 p.m. |
Mid-November will be the fullest version of this week so far. Starting Nov. 14, a Saturday can include a Torpedo on Morning View Drive and an afternoon at BEAMS on Malibu Road, with the Civic Center market and a stop at Hank's on the way home Sunday.
The calendar has a few dates before then. The City of Malibu's inclusive Halloween Party is Friday, Oct. 30, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Michael Landon Community Center, 24250 Pacific Coast Highway, with dancing, treats and a costume contest. On Saturday, Nov. 7, the Malibu Education Foundation holds its rescheduled Gala & Auction at Malibu High School, across the street from the Sandwich Shop, from 6 to 10:30 p.m. Tickets are $200, and the goal is $250,000, up from the $150,000 raised last year.
